Fire marshals keep Harper Woods, Mich., school closed

750 students have missed nearly 2 weeks of classes.

About 750 students have had no classes since Sept. 16, when their school building in Harper Woods, Mich., was padlocked by fire marshals who found code violations. State officials say they have no knowledge of the school, Southshore Educational Center, which opened Sept. 2 in the abandoned Notre Dame High in Harper Woods. Southshore has been funded by private and corporate donations and shcool leaders hope that it can become a charter school and be funded by the state.
