San Diego district projects its deficit at $180 million

7 elementary schools may be closed to erase funding gap

From The San Diego Union-Tribune: The projected deficit in the San Diego school district's budget has soared past $180 million, prompting a fresh look at several cost-cutting measures, including shuttering seven elementary schools. Just two months ago, the school board was looking at a $146.7 million shortfall. That was based on the state's February budget deal. Since then, the deficit in the state spending plan has ballooned by $24 billion.
