Former charter school official in St. Louis indicted

Sept. 13, 2011
Fred Robinson allegedly stole funds from Paideia Academy, which now is closed

From The St. Louis Post-Dispatch: The board chairman for a now-defunct charter school in St. Louis has been arrested on multiple fraud charges involving state and federal education dollars that were diverted from the school. Fred W. Robinson, 69, faces one count of wire fraud and seven felony counts of federal program theft. The indictment alleges that Robinson used about $257,000 of federal education money earmarked for Paideia Academy to buy and renovate a building for a day care center. After years of academic failure, state education officials did not renew Paideia's charter, and it closed in June 2010. The school had been operating two campuses in St. Louis, and when it closed, it had $454,000 in the bank. State officials do not know what had happened to the money.
