Opponents of district consolidation gather signatures in Maine

Opponents of Maine's school-district consolidation law say they are preparing to submit more than 60,000 signatures to the Secretary of State's office in an effort to repeal the law. The Maine Coalition to Save Schools says it has collected more than the 55,087 signatures needed to land a question on the ballot. If the secretary of state certifies enough signatures, a referendum on a repeal of the consolidation law could appear on the November 2009 ballot. Gov. John Baldacci's administration has pushed the school-district consolidation law, enacted last year, as a way to save state money by reducing the number of school districts in the state from 290 to 80.
