School is winner of The Aspen Institute's first annual prize for excellence

News release: The Aspen Institute College Excellence Program has chosen Valencia College in Orlando, Fla., as the nation’s top community college.

FROM SEPTEMBER 2011....News release: The Aspen Institute's College Excellence Program has announced the 10 community colleges selected as finalists for the first annual Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. The finalist selections were based on exceptional and improving completion rates, and labor-market and learning outcomes The original pool of 1,200 community colleges was pared to 120 in April. The winner of the prize and up to three runners-up will share a $1 million award.

The finalists: Lake Area Technical Institute, Watertown, S.D.; Miami Dade College, Miami, Fla.; Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Perkinston, Miss.; Mott Community College, Flint, Mich.; Northeast Iowa Community College-Calmar, Calmar, Iowa; Santa Barbara City College, Santa Barbara, Calif.; Southwest Texas Junior College, Uvalde, Texas; Valencia College, Orlando, Fla.; Walla Walla Community College, Walla Walla, Wash.; and West Kentucky Community and Technical College, Paducah, Ky.
