The Carnegie Corporation of New York, one of the nation's foremost philanthropies, today is to award gifts totaling $11 million to help Dillard, Tulane and Xavier universities in New Orleans recover from Hurricane Katrina-related damage. All three universities say they will use their grants to recruit and retain teachers. The foundation also is giving $1 million to Teach for America to help increase the number of its instructors who will teach at New Orleans elementary and secondary schools.
