The Algiers Charter Schools Association, which runs nine schools in Orleans Parish, La., is up against a considerable financial roadblock when it comes to fixing its crumbling facilities. According to a comprehensive assessment of all public schools in Orleans Parish, it would cost about $71 million to repair the nine facilities that the group operates and $134 million to replace them entirely. All nine campuses show serious signs of neglect, caused by years of deferred maintenance. The association rents all nine facilities and has no direct control over capital improvements.
