Louisiana senate passes voucher plan

June 12, 2008
Bill would pay private school tuition for up to 1,500 lower-income students in primary grades

The Louisiana Senate has approved a $10 million pilot program that would pay private school tuition for some children in Orleans Parish public schools. The 25-12 Senate vote sends the bill back to the state house for its reconsideration. Some form of the measure is now certain to reach the governor's desk, with the plan slated to start this fall. In its first year, the program would pay about $6,300 or a private school's yearly tuition -- whichever is less -- directly to a private school for K-3 students coming from households with income less than 250 percent of the federal poverty level. That is $53,000 for a family of four.
