Kansas community college is sued over public records request

From The Kansas City Star: A student journalist is suing Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kan., contending that the school charges excessive fees for public documents. The student newspaper, the Campus Ledger, and reporter Marcus Clem requested seven months of emails between a former college employee, who had been abruptly let go, and the employee’s supervisor. Administrators responded that would require “a significant amount of time and expense,” and documents would be released once the newspaper paid $47,426. The lawsuit contends that the fees sought are excessive and “an effort to chill the public’s access to information that should be readily available.”
