Class-size waivers soar in Texas

State has granted three times as many waivers as last year

From The Austin American-Statesman: Texas has seen a more than threefold increase in just one year in the number of elementary schools allowed to exceed class-size limits. State officials have allowed public school districts to exceed the 22-student limit in 6,988 K-4 classrooms; that's up from 2,238 a year ago. The waivers affect more than 150,000 students and nearly 30 percent of all Texas elementary schools.

From The Austin American-Statesman: Two months after school began, some students in Texas are still being shuffled around as districts try to get below the state cap on class sizes— 22 students per class in kindergarten to fourth grade. Budget-tightening, coupled with a promise by the Texas Education Agency to be more lenient in granting waivers on class sizes, have made the beginning of the school year chaotic for many families.
