Class-size waivers soar in Texas

Nov. 28, 2011
State has granted three times as many waivers as last year

From The Austin American-Statesman: Texas has seen a more than threefold increase in just one year in the number of elementary schools allowed to exceed class-size limits. State officials have allowed public school districts to exceed the 22-student limit in 6,988 K-4 classrooms; that's up from 2,238 a year ago. The waivers affect more than 150,000 students and nearly 30 percent of all Texas elementary schools.

Budget-tightening, coupled with a promise by the Texas Education Agency to be more lenient in granting waivers on class sizes, have made the beginning of the school year chaotic for many families.
