Enrollment growth slower than expected in Charlotte

Sept. 20, 2007
Student numbers rise, but totals are 2,300 less than projections

As expected, more students than ever are attending Charlotte-Mecklenburg (N.C.) Schools. Not so expected: This year's enrollment increase is 40 percent lower than projected. The district grew by 2,900 students this year, but school leaders anticipated 5,200. The slower growth mirrors what's happening in other North Carolina school systems -- including Wake, Guilford, Union, Catawba and Mooresville. It's not clear why so many predictions missed. Charlotte administrators say they have not found a surge in students attending home, private or charter schools. They'll do a more thorough analysis after taking official counts next week.
