Correcting newspaper report, district says $1.6 million in spending covered wide range of items

From The Detroit Free Press: Detroit Public Schools officials charged more than $1.6 million to district credit cards over the year starting March 2010 for a wide range of items from contractor bills to toilet paper and not primarily for travel as public financial documents made it appear. The Free Press reported last month that the district spent $1.6 million on travel from March 2010 to March 2011. The report was based on information from two district documents. The documents include $1.6 million in purchase card expenditures under the heading "American Express Travel Related." District officials provided some details about the purchases last week after the story was published.
