Hundreds of students fled Hurricane Katrina two years ago and enrolled in Memphis and Shelby County schools.
Two years ago, Hurricane Katrina sent hundreds of students fleeing the Gulf Coast into Memphis and Shelby County, Tenn., schools. Nearly 640 uprooted students were taken in by county schools and another 800 by city schools. Not until now has the state agreed to reimburse Tennessee school districts for educating displaced students in 2005. About $3.6 million is being distributed to school districts, and nearly $2 million of that will go to Memphis and Shelby County Schools.
