Enrollment at state's charter schools surpasses 100,000

Enrollment at Michigan charter schools broke the 100,000 mark for the first time this year, just 13 years after lawmakers first approved their creation, according to data from the Michigan Association of Public School Academies. Official enrollment numbers have not yet been released by the state Department of Education, but a survey that included each of state's 230 charters found that enrollment jumped to 100,146 this school year from 99,124 in 2006-07.

EARLIER: Charter schools in Michigan and other Great Lakes states have lower student achievement than traditional public schools with similar student demographics, but charter results are improving, according to a study by the Great Lakes Center for Education Research and Practice. Lead researcher Gary Miron of the Western Michigan University Evaluation Center says the findings indicate that Michigan should not lift the cap on the number of charter schools, as some leaders have recently suggested.
