With only two students enrolled, Shirley Elementary ends 175-year existence

From The Bangor Daily News: After nearly 175 years, The Shirley (Maine) School Committee will close the one-room Shirley Elementary School on July 1 because of low enrollment. The last school day is Thursday. The school has had enrollments as high as 50, but now has only two students. Several attempts have been made to close the school in previous years. In the 1980s, Shirley was the first town in the state to dissolve a school district when district officials pushed to close the school.
