Michigan district decides to defer bond issue; Swartz Creek has planned to seek funds for a new high school, but officials say timing is not right.

The Swartz Creek (Mich.) school board has put an indefinite hold on plans to seek a $75.8-million bond issue. With gas prices above $3 a gallon and unpopular taxes being passed by state lawmakers, district officials say the timing is not right. The money would have gone toward a new high school and auditorium, as well as safety and technology upgrades. In May, voters rejected two more bond requests put forward by the district. The latest proposal also would have provided funds to convert the existing middle school to house grades 5-6 and convert the existing high school to house grades 7-8.
