Voters in the Yakima (Wash.) district have turned down a $65.7 million bond request that would have replaced four elementary schools--Garfield, Hoover, McKinley and Nob Hill--as well as Stanton Academy and the Discovery Lab School. Officials say all the votes have not been tallied, but it was unlikely that there would be enough yes votes to reach a 60 percent majority.

EARLIER: Voters in the Yakima (Wash.) school district are deciding on March 14 whether to approve a $65.7 million bond proposal. The funds would enable the district to replace Garfield, Hoover, McKinley and Nob Hill elementary schools, as well as Stanton Academy and the Discovery Lab School. If voters approve the request, the state would contribute $27.3 million to the construction projects. The proposal needs a 60 percent majority for approval. A $119 million bond proposal last May failed to win 60 percent of the vote.
