Charges against builder prompt district to reconsider contract

Socorro (Texas) district chose company whose president has been indicted on bribery charges

The Socorro (Texas) Independent School District may look for another company to build the first phase of a new high school in Pebble Hills because of corruption charges brought against the builder it has hired. Steven Sambrano, president of SamCorp, and his consultant, Ramiro Guzman, face federal charges in connection with the bribery of officials in the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo (Texas) district. Socorro Superintendent Sylvia P. Atkinson says the $23 million contract awarded last month will be brought back to the Board of Trustees for "further consideration." Atkinson says SamCorp has built four schools for the district.
