Forsyth County (N.C.) school board may push for November bond vote

June 27, 2012
Board members may seek to put proposal on ballot even though county commissioners have rejected the request

From The Winston-Salem Journal: The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County (N.C.) school board is discussing the possibility of petitioning the Forsyth County commissioners to put a school bond package on the November ballot, even though commissioners already have shot down a request to put a $223.7 million bond package before voters. Under state law, the school board can compel the commissioners to place the school bond referendum on the ballot. If the bonds are approved, though, it is up to the commissioners to determine when — or if — the bonds are sold.

EARLIER....from The Winston-Salem Journal: The Forsyth County (N.C.) commissioners have denied the school district's request to put a $223 million dollar bond referendum on the November ballot. The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School District would have used the funds for renovations and expansions to existing schools. Commissioners say they rejected the school board request because the resulting debt would exceed the county's cap, and because it would have significantly increased taxes.
