San Antonio districts need lots of teachers

March 8, 2007
Booming enrollment and retiring staff mean many openings

Administrators in the Northside Independent School District--San Antonio's largest school system--plan to hire as many as 1,000 teachers to fill new classrooms and replace retiring teachers — if they can find that many. The district, which is growing at a historic pace, will open two new elementary schools and a new middle school in August. Competition for those who graduate with teaching degrees is fierce; the North East district, the area's second-largest system, expects to hire 500 new teachers this year. Northside recruiters will be at 29 job fairs between now and July.
