News release from the New York City School Construction Authority: New York City has begun construction on a new addition to PS 176 in the Cambria Heights neighborhood of Queens. The expansion, scheduled to be finished in 2016, will enable the school to accommodate about 370 more students. The school is home to a program for gifted and talented students, and provides a performing arts and music program with a school chorus.
“Our community has expressed the desire to have a local school that can meet their high expectations within walking distance of their homes, and this expansion will help meet those desires,” said Council Member Leroy Comrie.
The construction project is part of the city education department's $11.3 billion capital plan. This month, the city has opened 14 newly constructed school buildings, additions, and leased space.
“Today’s announcement to build an extension for PS 176 has been a battle I've waged for several years,” Assembly Member Barbara M. Clark said. “The real benefactors are the teachers and students.”
