Sacramento board gives reprieve to elementary school

From The Sacramento Bee: Sacramento Unified School District school board members have voted to keep A.M. Winn Elementary School open, although many trustees acknowledged school closures need to be considered in the cash-strapped district. Students, parents and teachers of the Rancho Cordova school celebrated the board's decision, which came two weeks after a vote on closing Winn was delayed following a chaotic and tense meeting.

FEBRUARY 2012...From The Sacramento Bee: The Sacramento City Unified School Board has voted to close one elementary school, but it also decided to spare another elementary that had been targeted for closure. A decision on the fate of a third elementary school has been delayed until next month. The board's decision to close Freeport Elementary School after this school year will save $442,000 annually. The board voted 5-2 not to close C.P. Huntington Elementary and deferred a decision on A.M. Winn Elementary until March 1. Board members halted school closures in December amid community pushback. Now the closings are back on the board's agenda. They will decide whether to close A.M. Winn, Freeport and C.P. Huntington elementary schools. By closing all three, the district would save $832,000. DECEMBER 2011.... From The Sacramento Bee: The Sacramento City (Calif.) Unified School District board has decided to shelve a proposal to close or consolidate five elementary schools. The board also delayed consideration of a plan for West Campus High and Sacramento Charter High to swap campuses or co-locate at Sacramento High. The district had anticipated $875,000 in savings from the closure and consolidation of the five elementary schools.
