Florida picks new education commissioner

Eric J. Smith, a former school district superintendent praised for his vision but criticized for his single-mindedness, has been named Florida's next commissioner of education. Smith has led districts in Anne Arundel County, Md., and Charlotte-Mecklenburg County, N.C.
