Ocean County (N.J.) College’s John C. Bartlett Jr. Hall is a 30,000-square-foot social science building featuring classroom space, computer labs, faculty offices, student and staff lounges, storage areas and a conference room. The college’s continued surge in enrollment necessitated the new building, as enrollment has increased an average of 7 percent annually.

The architectural design is modern and sleek, while still complementing the traditional exterior of neighboring buildings, including the campus library and other academic facilities.

The $12 million building has received LEED silver certification. Green features include alternative transportation; a heat-island roof; no potable water irrigation; a 40.1 percent water-use reduction; Energy Star-rated light fixtures; high-efficiency windows; sun shades; 83 percent construction waste management; 23 percent recycled content in building materials; 32 percent local and regional building materials; and low- to no-VOCs in sealants, adhesives, paint and carpet. Signage is posted inside and outside the building to educate occupants of the building’s green features.

The building was designed by DMR Architects (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.).
