Educators object to Wi-Fi Internet spending proposal

Teachers say a plan to expand wireless Internet in schools would happen at the expense of other services and would fall short of the funding needs, The Hill reported. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Tom Wheeler is trying to steer billions to Wi-Fi within the federal e-Rate program, which helps K-12 schools and libraries pay for broadband Internet and phone services. Wheeler’s modernization proposal would extend access to Wi-Fi technology to millions of students and support the growing use of electronic devices in the classroom. Other critics decry the funding distribution and say the proposal hurts rural schools. The FCC is expected to vote on the plan Friday.
