A Select Group: Architectural Portfolio 2011 Commentary

Nov. 1, 2011
This year's Architectural Portfolio jury considers this year's entries.

In August, three industry professionals hailing from Washington, D.C., Colorado and California determined the outcome of this year's Architectural Portfolio competition.

The jury considered important the following criteria when choosing citation winners and other outstanding designs in this year's competition:

Building designs should keep in mind:

  • Sustainability/Daylighting.
  • Security.
  • Transparency.
  • Flexibility.
  • Adaptability.
  • Community connection.

In addition, a facility should:

  • Encourage building as teacher.
  • Successfully model energy achievement.
  • Promote specificity of place.
  • Use space efficiently.
  • Be a living laboratory.
  • Incorporate a connection to nature and encourage a learning relationship between the inside and outside.
