New York City plans to spend $4.4 billion on school construction over the next five years, the New York Daily News reported.
$490 million will be used to reduce class sizes by producing 39,500 new public school seats. Another $480 million will be used to scrap trailers used as temporary classrooms, and $480 million will be spent to remove toxic PCBs from schools. That will bring the total cost of removing the chemicals to $1 billion.
The city also pledged to install a science lab in every middle school in the city, a goal that is expected to cost $5 million.
