A confirmed case of COVID-19 on a job site on campus has forced Chico State University to evaluate future construction projects this year.
The Chico Enterprise-Record reports that a contractor’s employee working on the new Physical Sciences building on campus had tested positive for the virus.
As a result, work on the building by DPR Construction has been delayed for “at least two weeks,” according to Facilities Management and Services Associated Vice President Michael Guzzi.
“At this point, with the science building being shut down for at last a couple weeks, obviously we’re going to start evaluating other future projects to see how they could be affected,” Guzzi said.
For example, the university’s “standard classroom refreshes” over the summer must be considered to determine whether they will be completed as scheduled.
The delay of the new building has a “domino effect” on other planned projects later in the year. If construction is further delayed, it could hold off its completion later in the summer, which would affect “move in” and “move out” times for those with offices and classes in the older Physical Sciences building.
