Louisiana district will build its first new high school in 45 years
The Lafayette Parish (La.) school board has voted to build its first new high school in 45 years.
KATC-TV reports that the district will construct a high school on a 600-acre site it owns near Youngsville. The location is one of the fastest-growing area in the parish. The new high school is expected to cost $65 million and accommodate up to 1,750 students.
The district has an enrollment of more than 30,000, and has five traditional high schools, as well as a STEM Magnet Academy, an Early College Academy and a Preparatory School. Since the last high schools were built the population in Lafayette Parish has more than doubled from 112,093 in 1970 to 221,578 in 2010.
