California teacher who fired gun in class has quit

Seaside High School teacher Dennis Alexander was delivering a lesson on gun safety when his weapon accidentally discharged.

A California school teacher who discharged his gun during a class last month has resigned.

The Santa Cruz Sentinel reports that Dennis Alexander, who taught at Seaside High School in Seaside, Calif., submitted his resignation to the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District. The resignation is effective at the end of the school year, but Alexander remains on administrative leave.

Alexander is an administration of justice teacher at Seaside High. He also is a reserve Sand City police officer and Seaside City Councilman.

The teacher accidentally discharged a Glock 21 .45-caliber handgun, which was his police service weapon, on March 13 while teaching a room full of students about gun safety. Three students were injured by falling ceiling debris.

California law prohibits firearms on campus except for authorized law enforcement or security personnel. And in a law that took effect Jan. 1, not even California school employees with concealed carry permits can bring firearms on campus.
