Philip D. Lanoue of the Clarke County (Ga.) School District has been named National Superintendent of the Year by AASA, The School Superintendents Association.
AASA recognized Lanoue was selected for creativity in meeting the needs of students; for strength in both personal and organizational communication; for improving his administrative knowledge and skills and providing professional development opportunities and motivation to others; and for active participation in local community activities and an understanding of regional, national and international issues.
“I am incredibly honored to be recognized as National Superintendent of the Year, and am so proud to share this recognition with Athens and the Clarke County School District community,” said Lanoue. “Together, as a community of learners, we have made a difference in the lives of our children, and I am so pleased that we have been recognized for this on a national level.”
Lanoue has led the 13,000-student district, based in Athens, since 2009.
The other finalists for Superintendent of the Year were Mary Ellen Elia of Hillsborough County (Fla.) Public Schools, Patrick Murphy of Arlington (Va.) Public Schools, ajnd Patrice Pujol of Ascension Parish (La.) Public Schools. The selection of Lanoue was announced at AASA's National Conference on Education in San Diego.
“The superintendent’s job is one of the most difficult and demanding jobs in America, which is why I am so impressed by the tremendous work being done by school system leaders in public education today,” said Daniel A. Domenech, executive director, AASA.
