The State University of New York at Albany has received a $4 million lighting upgrade at its Uptown campus as part of an energy-efficiency project in collaboration with the New York Power Authority and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.

The lighting upgrade, which improved illumination while lowering energy consumption, covered nearly 1,750 classrooms and other spaces at nine buildings on the campus, the power authority says. The improvements are expected to save the university about $225,000 in energy costs and eliminate more than 1,100 tons of greenhouse gas emissions a year.

The upgrades are part of the state’s “Build Smart NY,” initiative by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo that seeks to increase energy efficiency in state buildings by 20 percent in seven years.
