Efficiency Earns Spokane District Utility Rebates

The Spokane (Wash.) school district has qualified for about $429,000 in utility rebates because of energy-efficiency improvements in district facilities. Officials expect the changes will save the district about $207,000 a year in energy costs.

Among the improvements the district made at 10 schools and its warehouse: installation of high-efficiency boilers, water heaters, insulation, lighting, Energy Star appliances and other improvements. The upgrades will reduce the district’s annual energy demand by 1.4 million kilowatt-hours—enough energy savings to power 116 homes and provide natural gas service to 187 homes for a year. 

“Reducing energy use is a great example to set for our future generations,” Spokane Associate Superintendent. Mark Anderson said in a news release. “By upgrading our facilities, we are creating a better learning environment for our students and teaching them to be stewards of energy efficiency.”
