Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., has proposed building a high-tech campus in New York City that would focus on applied science research and graduate education.

The university envisions that such a campus would be built on Roosevelt Island in phases over 25 years. Facilities that would be constructed on the site would include academic and research space, as well as housing for students and faculty members. In the long term, Stanford envisions a campus that would serve as many as 2,200 students.

Stanford is one of more than 25 institutions that have submitted proposals to the New York City Economic Development Corporation to build a campus in the city with a science and engineering concentration. The city says it expects to issue requests for proposals later this year and hopes to choose a winning project by the end of 2011.
