Teachers union sues to block some of Chicago's school closings

The Chicago Teachers Union has sued the city's school system to stop 10 schools from being shuttered. The Chicago Tribune reports that the lawsuit is the third such action aimed at reversing plans to close numerous campuses. Unlike two federal lawsuits filed by parents that, among other things, contend that the closings discriminate against students who are African American or have disabilities, the union's lawsuit argues that district did not follow proper procedure in 10 closures. The suit asserts that the district ignored recommendations of independent hearing officers who opposed the closings.
