Stanford tops fundraising list for U.S. higher-education institutions

The $1.03 billion in contributions that Stanford received in 2012 is the first time an institution has topped $1 billion in one year.

Stanford University collected $1.03 billion in fundraising in 2012, the first U.S. higher-education institution to raise more than $1 billion in one year. The Council for Aid to Education says that Stanford has topped the list of top fund-raising institutions in each of the past eight years. Overall, charitable contributions to colleges and universities in the United States in 2012 amounted to 31.2 billion, an increase of 2.3 percent over the previous year.
