Revised deficit-reduction plan will keep schools operating in Pontiac (Mich.) district

State officials had cut off funding because district had not made enough progress in cutting deficit

Michigan Education Superintendent Mike Flanagan has approved a deficit elimination plan for the Pontiac school district that would enable the system to receive funds that are being withheld. The Detroit News reports that without the funding, Pontiac was at risk of having to shut down at the end of this week because it would not be able to meet its payroll. Although the immediate danger of not having money to operate will subside, the district is still facing a dire financial situation. A preliminary review of the Pontiac district's finances reveal it has not made sufficient progress on eliminating its $37.7 million deficit.
