Philadelphia district doesn't want any charter school expansion

April 26, 2013
21 of the city's charter schools have asked to expand, but the district says its budget woes are too severe.

Citing a $304 million shortfall, the Philadelphia School District is recommending against expanding any charter schools in 2013-14. The district has 84 charter schools, and The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that 21 of the charters had requested expansions in the next academic year that would have added a total of 15,000 seats. The expansions would have added $500 million in charter costs to the district over the next five years. Last year, the Philadelphia approved expansions of 14 charter schools that will add 5,416 seats by 2017.
