New Chicago high school will not bear Obama’s name

Mayor Rahm Emanuel has nixed his plan to name an exclusive high school in an affluent part of the city after President Barack Obama, the Chicago Tribune has reported. The construction of the new $60 million magnet school is intended to help address the increasing demand for placement in selective academic programs, but the location –predominately white Near North Side – and the exclusivity of the school prompted objections from those who believe the honor should be bestowed on a school in a more diverse area that is open to all students.
