Guilford County (N.C.) district will tear down vacant elementary

Former Gibsonvile Elementary, parts of which were built in the 1920s, has been deteriorating since it closed in 2006.

The Guilford County (N.C.) School Board has voted to demolish the old Gibsonville Elementary School building instead of giving the community more time to restore it. The Greenville News-Record says that district officials believe the facility has become a nuisance and a safety hazard. The school became vacant in 2006 after a new school was built next to it. A community group had expressed interest in preserving the old building, but officials say nothing has come of that interest.
