Fertilizer explosion in Texas heavily damages intermediate school

The deadly explosion at a fertilizer plant in West, Texas, resulted in a fire that heavily damaged West Intermediate says.  The explosion at the West Fertilizer Co. plan Wednesday night killed as many as 15 people and injured more than 160 others.

ALSO: The Waco Tribune-Herald reports that a fire at the West Fertilizer Co. plant earlier this year led to the evacuation of West Intemediate School. "The District and (West Intermediate) were not notified ahead of time that the fertilizer plant was carrying out a controlled burn of pallets and brush," Superintendent Marty Crawford wrote to parents after the February fire.

MORE: The Connally (Texas) Independent School District, based in Waco, is making plans to provide facilities, transportation, nutrition and other necessities for West District students so they can resume school as soon as possible.

"Students will be ensured a physically and emotionally safe and secure environment," the Connelly district says in a news release. "Other school districts in the area are combining efforts and resources to provide supplies, furniture, personnel and other needs for the West ISD students. Plans are still in progress at this time."
