43 percent of districts say they're taking part in farm-to-school activities

The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that in the 2012-2013 school year, 3,812 districts were buying local food products and teaching children where their food comes from. The districts account for 38,629 schools and 21,008,254 students, the USDA says. Districts that bought local products in 2011-12 spent nearly $2.6 billion on school food, and more than $354 million of that was spent on local products.
