30 years later: A nation still at risk

"A Nation at Risk," the report issued 30 years ago this week by the U.S. Education Department, was meant as a wake-up call for the country. It spelled out where the United States was coming up short in education and what steps could be taken to avert a crisis. But, The Associated Press writes, the report's warnings still reverberate today: 1 in 4 Americans are failing to complete a high school degree on time, and the nation trails other countries in the percentage of young people who complete college.
