In 2016-17, a total of 332,727 U.S. college students studied abroad for academic credit, according to the International Institute of Education's annual Open Doors report.
That represents an increase of 2.3 percent over the previous year's 325,339. More than 54 percent of those students—181,145—studied in Europe, the report says.
As it was the previous year, the most popular nation for U.S. students abroad was the United Kingdom—39,851 students traveled there to pursue their education.
