States where public school enrollment is projected to have the highest percentage declines (2015 to 2027)

The Northeast and Midwest sections of the nation will see enrollment declines, the U.S. Department of Education's Projection of Education Statistics to 2027 predicts.

Public school enrollment in the Northeast and Midwest sections of the United States will continue to decline in the coming years, according to the federal government's Projection of Education Statistics to 2027.

Nationwide, the projections say that enrollment will increase by 3.2 percent from 2015 to 2027. But in the Northeast, student numbers are expected to decline by 3.9 percent, and in the Midwest, the projected decline is 1.4 percent.

That continues a trend those areas have seen in recent years—Northeast enrollment fell 1.7 percent from 2010 to 2015, and Midwest enrollment declined 0.5 percent in those year.

Three Northeast states—Connecticut, New Hampshire and Vermont—top the list of states projected to have the highest percentage enrollment declines from 2015 to 2027.
