States where public school enrollment is projected to grow the most (2015 to 2027)

The Department of Education's Projection of Education Statistics to 2027 predicts that between 2015 and 2027, public school enrollment will increase by 3.2 percent.

The Projection of Education Statistics to 2027, just released by the Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics, predicts that in fall 2027, enrollment in public elementary and secondary schools will be 52,059,100.

That would be a 3.2 percent increase over the fall 2015 nationwide public enrollment of 50,438,043.

The numbers show that enrollment growth is expected in 33 states and Washington, D.C.; the remaining 17 states are expected to experience enrollment drops.

Several states and the Washington, D.C., will see double-digit percentage growth over those 12 years, the projections indicate.

Washington, D.C., is projected to have the highest percentage growth—28.1 percent. Its enrollment is predicted to increase from 84,024 to 107,600.
