States where K-12 enrollment is growing the fastest, 2014 to 2026

April 17, 2018
Federal projections say enrollment is expected to rise in the South and West sections of the nation, and decline in the Northeast and Midwest.

Enrollment in public elementary and secondary schools is projected to increase by 2.8 percent between 2014 and 2026, according to an annual report from the National Center for Education Statistics. That would put the total number of students in K-12 public schools at 51,737,900.

"Projections of Education Statistics to 2026" shows that students numbers are predicted to climb during those years in the South and West regions of the nation—8.3 percent in the South and 4.3 percent in the West. The numbers are projected to drop in the Northeast by 5.0 percent and in the Midwest by 3.1 percent.

Here are the 10 states projected to have highest percentage growth of student enrollment from 2014 to 2026.
