In fall 2017, 309 new charter schools opened across the nation, the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools says.

Also, 238 charter schools shut down in spring 2017; the net result was 71 additional charter schools in the United States in 2017-18 and 7,038 charter schools in total.

The nation's two largest states—California and Texas—also had the greatest number of new charters schools ini fall 2017; California opened 65, and Texas opened 47.
