States with the lowest median student loan debt

Median debt among Wyoming residents is the lowest, according to the Urban Institute.

To find the areas of the United States where people have the smallest student loan debt, go west.

The Urban Institute says Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, Alaska, and New Mexico led the list of states with the lowest median loan debt as of the end of 2017. The median student loan debt in Wyoming was $13,528, the institute says.

Nationwide, the median student loan debt for Americans is $16,995, The overall student loan debt in the United States was about $1.38 trillion at the end of 2017. About one out of six Americans has student loans that have yet to be paid off, the institute says.
