School districts in the United States spent $59.8 billion in 2009-10 in capital outlay, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. In Revenues and Expenditures for Public Elementary and Secondary School Districts: School Year 2009-10, NCES says school districts spent $47.1 billion on construction, $9.4 billion on equipment, and $3.3 billion on land and existing structures.
